Some of the most successful and lucrative marketing campaigns have been inspired by contributions from Black talent. From Pillsbury’s ‘Say Hello to Poppin’ Fresh Dough’ (1972) by Carol H. Williams to Jimmy Smith’s work on the iconic ‘Nike Basketball’ campaigns and the “G” campaign for Gatorade, Black people are and have been instrumental not only to the advertising industry but American culture. Yet–we are only 8.1% of the industry, making up just 4% of VPs, and 1% of C-Suite. We don’t want to be used for fresh and entertaining content, but excluded from decision-making roles. When is the advertising industry going to wake up and bet on Black? It’s time for a real conversation on how your company can fund and support platforms for Black talent and businesses.
